DESERT DWELLING
When desert dog "Dutchess"and I are not on the road looking for,
or staying at a free campsite, we like to spend time at our cabin.
Located between Twentynine Palms and Amboy, it sits on ten acres
in the Mojave Desert in an area known as Wonder Valley. It is far
away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. This gives us a chance
to recharge our batteries and to enjoy nature while doing so. At an
elevation of 2,100 feet on the south slope of the Sheephole Mountains,
the view from our patio is breathtaking.
DESERT VIEW
Among the many visitors that we get are orioles, warblers, sparrows,
cactus wrens, finches, raven and the mourning doves.
The "clown of the desert", the road runner, will sometimes treat us
to a performance in exchange for some slices of frozen hot dog.
An occasional ladderback woodpecker will come by to tap on the
utility pole to see if it holds any termites to feast on.
Only twice in the twenty years that we have owned the cabin,
did I see a snake, putting to rest the myth that the desert is
infested with snakes.
Once in a great while a desert tortoise will pass thru, always from
south to north, never in a hurry, we had one spend the night in a
cozy corner just outside the cabin only to resume its trek the
next morning after the sun had warmed the air.
Antelope squirrels, packrats, desert mice, lizards, cottontails,
the list goes on and on.
Let's not forget the ever present coyotes, seldom seen by day,
they can be heard at night when howling to each other and the moon.
Speaking of the moon, I can assure you that the night sky is more
spectacular than any fireworks I've ever seen.
Falling stars, comets and the like can be easily observed by the
naked eye.
One early morning when I was sitting on our deck, sipping a cup
of coffee while watching this wonderful world unfold, a guest from
the big city asked me: "What are you looking at?"
